Dont forget some hot water systems have Vitrous enamel storage tanks and these have a Sacrificial anode and as a broad rule need replacing every 5 to 8 years, this will prolong the life of the storage tank.
Every 6 months operate the manual lever on the relief valves on your storage hot water tank so as to confirm they are working they should discharge water when the lever is operated and reseal afterwards
